US workshop on Daily Recommended Intakes (DRIs), Washington DC,
EURRECA Network members attended this important workshop to ensure that learnings from the US experience with DRIs can be incorporated in the development of our work.
Dietary Reference Intakes, a concept developed between 1994 and 2004, represented a new approach to nutrient reference standards. This US Institute of Medicine workshop (jointly sponsored by the US Department of Health and Human Services, US Department of Agriculture, the Canadian
Institutes for Health Research, and Health Canada) offered an opportunity to discuss the lessons learned from the DRI development process and to identify issues to be considered in enhancing the approach. The discussions were not intended to provide consensus recommendations on issues, but rather were focused on allowing a range of stakeholder input.
The EURRECA Network was represented by Sue Fairweather-Tait (1), Pieter van ´t Veer (2) and Loek Pijls (3). Workshops included topics central to URRECA, and the benefit of attendance will flow through directly to the Network, especially to the work of RA1.2 & RA1.4. A paper is in preparation by the EURRECA attendees to draw out the key learning points for the Network. Watch this space!
