18th October 2009 saw the first CommNet European Food Science Day held in Brussels, where ten FP6 & FP7 projects in the field of food quality, food safety and nutrition presented updates on their progress and results to date to an audience of around 150 representatives of EC-wide, Brussels based agencies concerned with and about food and food safety.
The objective of the day (subtitled ‘bringing results back to consumers’) was to demonstrate the impact on EU Citizens of the whole area of research covered by these projects highlighting the impact their work has on everyday lives across Europe, including decision making on food and health.
The day was chaired by EURRECA’s Rhonda Smith and sponsored by MEP, Lena Ek. Speakers included Antonio Di Guilio, Head of Unit for this area for DG Research, together with Catherine Geslain Laneelle, Executive Director for EFSA.
Other speakers included Beate Kettlitz from CIAA, Britt Maestroni from FAO/IAEA, Maive Rute from DG Research and Willemien Bax from BEUC. A Q&A session was chaired by Marit Paulsen, MEP who is also Vice Chairwoman of AGRI.
European Food Science Day was a collective effort of ten research networks within CommNet who together represent more than 3000 European researchers. The goal of European Food Science Day is to further spread this important scientific knowledge to a wider audience.
Alongside EURRECA, the other projects taking part in this event were CASCADE, CHILL-ON, EARNEST, EPIZONE, MoniQA, PathogenCombat, PHIME, SABRE and SME-RECEPTOR
